Football Drills For Kids

So what are some good football drills for kids?  Teaching kids is often times more challenging than teaching high school football players.  Then again, some would say that it is more rewarding as well.  You have to make an effort to instruct as well and to keep them having fun.  We all know that if a kid decides he doesn't want to do something you aren't going to get much effort. Here are a few football drills that will help you teach kids the fundamentals of football, and let them enjoy practice.

Football Drills For Kids

  1. Chase Drill
  2. Monkey Roll Drill
  3. Hill Sprints
Chase Drill:  This is a great drill to teach your kids how to tackle, and attempt to strip the ball.  Divide the team into two groups consisting of defenders and ball carriers.  The first ball carrier should assume a 2 yard lead on the defender.  At the whistle the ball carrier starts to run at half speed while the defender tries to tackle the carrier.  Only after the defender has secured the tackle should they attempt to strip the ball.

Football Drills For KidsMonkey Roll Drill: The purpose of the Monkey Roll Drill is to get the players used to falling while keeping the ball in contact with the body at four points: (1) hand (over the point); (2) Wrist; (3) Biceps; (4) Ribs. Start them out as shown in Frame 1. Player B (the one in the middle) starts the drill by rolling to his right (I always start out a drill going to the right - that's just me); In Frame 2, Player A (the one Player B is rolling toward) rolls OVER Player B, after which Player B gets up and prepares to roll back the other way; Player A, meanwhile will continue to roll (Frame 3) until he gets to Player C, who will then roll over Player A; at that point, Player A will get up and roll back the other way, first rolling over Player B, who will be arriving at his feet - and so forth. Go back and forth a few times. It is a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. It is also very useful.  Be careful also to avoid mixing very small players with very large players - it would not be wise to have a 200-pounder crash-land on a 110-pounder.

Hill Sprints:  Coaches love to make kids run.  And it is an important part of conditioning, but making them run the length of the field doesn't really make sense.  If, during the course of a game, your players have to run 100yds then something really good or something really bad just happened.  Better to stick to shorter distance.  Stick with distances between 20-50 yards.  Running up a hill is a great conditioning drill, and it teaches the kid proper running mechanics. There you have it.  Three football drills for kids that you can add to your practices to increase productivity.  I cannot stress this enough, when working with kids be sure to make sure you let them BE KIDS.  If you find that balance between fun and work you will have a much better team.
