Top performer in the 40 yard dash, 3 cone drill, and 20 yard shuttle, Jamaal Charles workout and discipline is to thank for. Coming from the small Texas town of Port Arthur, Jamaal has always made sure his agility and speed was in elite shape. His workout routine is definitely how he became a top performer.
Every off-season Jamaal gets a little stronger and a little faster by focusing on his weaknesses and improving his strengths. When he trains with other hometown NFL players at the local YMCA he focuses on his speed and agility as a running back. This is how despite not getting many carries still averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Making the most out of every run is key and this his workout.
When Jamaal trains he makes sure to always keep his skill set sharp by doing a lot of one on ones and playing 7-on-7 with the other athletes from town. He also makes sure he stays conditioned by playing pick-up games of basketball. In addition, he is no stranger to the weight room, he's a solid 200+ lb. back and can seriously move. To maintain his leg strength he performs many complex movements including squats and deadlifts for strength and olympic lifts for power.
Nevertheless if you admire Jamaal's style of play you must understand he's a classic slasher and really burns guys left and right with his speed first and foremost. To train this you want to really make sure you have 3 steps down….
Step 1- Make sure you have no muscle imbalances.
Muscle Imbalances will hold you back from the natural form of running, so correct these asap
Step 2- Correct form
After you have corrected your imbalances make sure your running form is perfected
Step 3- Train!!
Now that your ready to go make sure you train your hip extension for strength (squat, deadlift, lunges, etc…) and train your hip flexion quickly (box jumps, ploys, etc…)
